Found a memory card in Stan Wadlow park on Canada Day. Do you know these people?
I've asked on Craigs List too.
The family has been to the Zoo, Niagara Falls and their son was in the back of a Toronto Police car. Photos date back to mid May.

Subject:Computer randomly plays music.
Time:07:42 pm
My computer has decided it's going to play random music/news broadcasts for me. Really, I am not too happy about this. I realize it's possible that my speakers are just picking up radio signals, but when I unplug the speakers from the computer, the music stops. Also, I'm not really convinced it's a radio signal I am picking up since it's the same songs that keep playing over and over (curse you Bowerbirds!). I close all my applications, the music continues. I've checked my processes for anything that could be playing this music...It's terribly annoying since I can't listen to my own music. What's going on?

Subject:Sony Vaio Laptop Won't Boot From Disc
Time:07:23 pm
So I've had this laptop for about two years now and never meant to keep windows on it for as long as I have. It was meant to be a short term replacement until I build a desktop computer for gaming and it was supposed to be turned into my everday linux machine. But there is one big problem, I can boot from a disc.

This seems to be a problem with lots of vaio computers but mine doesn't have any special way to do it. Yes, I've checked in the bios, there is an optical disc option (which is what my cdr/dvdr bay is connected to) but even with all other options disabled it will not boot from a cd.

I haven't been able to find a specific key to press either during startup to boot directly from it without going through the bios. To my knowloedge there is no bios update for this either. Any ideas how I can go about this easily?

Subject:Where to find...
Time:06:33 pm
a cutlery organizer made for SMALL drawers. Unfortunately the drawers in my new kitchen are tiny... 8.5" wide on the inside x 18" long. I have checked out kitchen stuff plus and bed, bath & beyond. Still need to look at Walmart and Linen's & Things, but if anyone has actually SEEN small cutlery organizers somewhere in Toronto please let me know.

If they don't exist I just might have to make them and start selling them!!

Thanks

**EDIT** I have checked walmart, LNT and Lowes...the smallest I've seen is 9" with nothing on the edges that I might be able to shave off. The ones that clip together don't come less than 3" wide, so if anyone sees anything else please let me know.

Subject:Dell Inspiron 1501 Audio Driver
Time:07:20 pm
Hey

I just reformatted Windows (went back to XP for the third time) and I always do this, I forget to keep a link for where I downloaded my Audio Driver for XP. Obviously I'm suppose to go to dell.ca and put in my service tag number but the version of Sigmatel Audio Driver that they have linked to download for my laptop DOESN'T WORK. The one they have posted shows up as R171789.exe and I've tried several times and it doesn't work. I tried calling Dell with this problem the last time but I don't have the patience for them because they never know what I'm talking about and I can't make out their thick accents, that sounds bad but I honestly can't make them out lol..

I know the last time I googled "Sigamtel Dell Audio Drivers" or something along those lines and kept trying different versions (which I have been doing for the last hour) but I can't seem to find it now..

Does anyone know what I should do or another driver I could download?

Subject:Automatix?
Time:03:02 pm
I left Ubuntu about a year and used automatix for clear type fonts, mp3 support, java2sdk, and other nifty utilities including the ability to use ctrl + alt + del to launch gtop.

My AMD notebook is finally somewhat supported so I gave 8.04 a shot. This is painful to search for each codec and I noticed that ubuntu 8.04 defaults to opensource community repositories which are unstable and hosed my system much to my irration.

Anyway is Automatix gone now? What else can I use to find these great programs all located in a single place?

Subject:the state of backup technology
Time:02:41 pm
it's been...a long time since i was in charge of backups. well over a decade. using tar and hand-changed tapes that held less than a gigabyte are my history.

suddenly our managed backup solution is ditching us. i need to backup 200GB (uncompressed, much source code and some database dumps and graphics), most of which changes not-very-often, and i need to do it in a data center that is not at our office, and it would be nice if the solutions didn't take up much room in the rack at the data center and didn't cost an arm and a leg. we definitely don't need a robot if we can get decent-capacity tapes. i don't want to visit the data center every day, but every week is definitely acceptable. i do want to backup every day (incremental, obviously).

what's hip in scsi or net backup these days? and by hip i mean in the sweet spot price/sizewise. i'm willing to consider either NAS or something scsi-tape based (we don't have any FC infrastructure and i don't want to add it.)

i'm also interested to know if anyone has experience doing offsite, online backups with some reputable third party. sure, i can rsync to J Random Box, but i'd like some organization with accountability that runs in the $1-2k/mo price slot for our quantities. I've gotten quasi-quotes from a few like evault and amerivault in that price range, but personal experience about companies whose backup clients that don't suck would be awesome. i've used networker with distaste in the past, and getting tivoli running on our 64bit ubuntu was a challenge i'd like not to repeat--probably wouldn't have been too bad if we controlled the server as well. sigh.

thanks in advance for your help!

Subject:Makeup Cases
Time:05:14 pm
Does anyone know where in I can purchase makeup cases? Something a little bit like this. I know Sephora and MAC has them, but they're all at least $100. I don't need the case to be heat-insulated/proof, I just need a case that has different compartments that I can pull out once I open the case where I can sort all my makeup stuff, but that can also be easily moved around (so mini storage drawers are out of question). I'm looking for a place that is subway accessible.

Thanks in advance!

Subject:unique tattoo artists
Time:03:30 pm
Hi toronto -
I went through the tons of previous posts on finding a good tattoo artist in Toronto, but didn't find links to the kind of aesthetic I'm looking for. That might mean that it doesn't exist in T.O, but I hope it does!
I'm in love with the work of a Montreal artist called Emilie Roby (http://www.eroby.net/tattoos-scars/) and am hoping there's someone in Toronto that does similar work with a similar philsophy towards tattooing, since I don't plan to be in MTL for another few months at least. I like that her style tends towards lines, solid black, and is somewhat non-representational. Any tips? I've looked through the galleries at new tribe, adrenaline and sal's, and they have too many flaming skulls.
Thanks!!

Question/Problem: Last year I switched from my Toshiba laptop to an iBook because I had to have the Toshiba fixed (it "leaked" electricity through the speakers and then the screen broke.) I am on the Toshiba right now because I want it to work as backup in case something happens to the rather old iBook.

They fixed the screen and the electricity, but now there seems to be some sort of software problem. I suspect an infection, or maybe a firewall setting that I screwed up somewhere.

The first problem I encounter every time I try to surf (Wireless via Router) is that everything takes an age to load, even when both other computers in the house are switched off. We're on broadband and ..well, I just KNOW it takes too long. Often it won't even load AOL Email properly, and Deviantart and Gmail don't work at all.

Then I just now tried to open Deviantart in Internet Explorer, which I don't ever usually use, to see if that worked (which it didn't: it'll load the front page but won't log me in) and every time I clicked on a link in IE I got a spam popup saying different bogus messages about my computer being infected.

Now, that screams Spyware to me, but McAffee recently scanned everything and came up with 24 (!) instances of Spyware/Viruses/Trojans /whatever and those were of course deleted, so shouldn't this computer be clean now?

What can I do?

Update: OK.. just now when I went into "Edit post" to tag it, Firefox closed for a second to give me a popup in the shape of a Windows message, which I clicked away and then I got Firefox back, and it had opened a new tab next to this one leading to "antispywaremaster.com" ...so it has Firefox, too.

Operating System and VERSION: Windows XP Home Edition

Web Browser and VERSION: Firefox 2.0.0.14

Your level of experience: Intermediate

Duration of problem: Since I began to use this computer again... three months.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? McAffee virus scan, moving files to external harddrive to make 15+ GB of free space, defrag

(or pedophiles, depending on your age of course..)

Queen St. West from Duncan to John St (on the south side) is awash in pre-teen and teen girls.

SRSLY.

Apparently some "group" called "Jonas" something-or-other are in town to do a Much Music thing.

Just be warned if you are coming downtown and trying to get into, say, Babur...

nex

P.S. tagged with "waste management" for the apparent music group
